  • Dental Impants: The Future of Dentistry
    Posted 2007-07-13
Your smile says a lot about who you are. When a tooth is lost due to trauma, tooth decay or gum disease we have several solutions. These solutions will restore the beautiful look of your smile and the healthy function of your bite. Dental implants are quickly becoming the standard of care as an option to replace missing teeth providing a look, feel and function very close to that of a natural tooth. Replacement of missing teeth prevents problems that develop when teeth move or tip into the space left by the missing tooth. A missing tooth or teeth can be replaced by a non-removable permanent porcelain bridge. They are attached to teeth on either side of the space by preparing these teeth as anchor crowns with the missing teeth attached to them. It spans over the space and looks and feels just like your own teeth. This is the preferable method of replacing missing teeth when an implant can't be placed. Dentures and removable partial dentures are other choices to replace missing teeth. These are time-tested treatments but many people find them undesirable because they must be taken out regularly to brush and maintain healthy tissue, aren't always esthetically pleasing and can move when eating or speaking. To many, this may be the only option for form and function. Dental implants are titanium posts shaped like the root of a tooth and placed beneath the gums. These posts fuse to the jawbone and act as anchors for a crown, bridge or dentures. It is biocompatible with bone and gums. This makes it very stable over a long period of time. The implant remains below the gums and the bone grows to hold it securely in place. This allows the implant to function much like the natural root of the tooth, providing a stable structure that will eventually become the base structure for the tooth or teeth that it is meant to replace. Benefits include:
      • Improved biting pressure
      • Comfort and fit
      • Longevity and reliability
      • Increased self confidence
      • Improved esthetic appearance
