  • WHAT'S MY DOG?
    Posted 2007-11-06
Since rescuing my 11-year-old mixed breed dog, Theo, three years ago, I often wondered what breeds made up my scruffy mutt’s ancestry. I obviously wanted to satisfy my curiosity, but I mainly wanted to find out what breed-related issues may affect Theo as he advances in his senior years. Now veterinarians can do just that via canine genetic testing, such as the WISDOM Panel MX test. This technology is available to the millions of mixed breed dog owners eager to learn the breed makeup of their beloved pets. Mars Veterinary has just launched WISDOM Panel MX, a comprehensive DNA-based mixed breed test for dogs.  The test can detect more than 130 breeds that may be present in a mixed breed dog, covering 99 percent of American Kennel Club (AKC) registered dogs, and is offered exclusively through veterinarians. As a veterinarian I see so many mixed breed dogs.  The number one question from the proud owner of a new mixed breed puppy is, ‘hey doc what do you think he/she is a mix of?’ The answer to this question, especially in a young developing puppy, is a challenging one.  With a scientific test to answer this, a whole new wealth of information about this dog comes to light.  Finding out the makeup of their mutt means both veterinarians and dog owners will better understand their pets, why dogs display certain behavioral characteristics, and what kind of wellness or activity plan best suits an individual dog. Roughly half of all dogs in the United States are mixed breeds.  Therefore, a large number of pet owners are unsure of their pet's breed composition.  This test eliminates the guessing game. Having this knowledge can help owners improve their relationships with their pets. Furthermore, your veterinarian can help interpret the results and individualize care for their companions. The WISDOM Panel test is based on the analysis of more than 19 million DNA markers from more than 13,000 dogs. As a result, the test is able to detect the breed composition of a dog with an average accuracy of 84 percent. The Wisdom Panel can detect more than 130 AKC-recognized breeds in your dog with a sample of their DNA. The DNA is obtained from a small blood sample, which can easily be collected during a routine veterinary visit.     Within two to three weeks, both the dog’s owner and veterinarian will be provided with a customized report that includes the dog's breed analysis and detailed information on the appearance and potential behavioral characteristics of the detected breeds. The veterinarian and owner can then create a comprehensive life plan covering important factors such as nutrition, exercise and training needs. This will make the bond with your furry family member even stronger and will enable your veterinarian to provide the best care for a long and happy life.  To find out more information, visit www.whatsmydog.com or ask your family veterinarian.
